Hosting Your Podcast By Tim 'Gonzo' Gordon So you want to podcast. Now what about your podcast?
You’ve got a concept, know how to create compelling content, have a good target audience – maybe even a built in audience from your newsletter.
One of the questions you’ll have to answer revolves around publishing your podcast. Specifically, where should you host it?
If your website is on a server that you picked more or less at random, you might take a look at what will happen if you publish your podcast and host those large MP3 files on your current server. Ask the company what the charges will be if you start using a lot more bandwidth.
I’ve heard of podcasters who jumped in headfirst to podcasting without realizing how the bandwidth issue might affect them, and shortly found them selves with hundreds or even thousands of dollars in extra fees.
Of course you want to be successful, but at what price?
When I launched the Tim ‘Gonzo’ Gordon Show, I was at least aware of the issue, and poked

around the web looking for services that would host podcasts and not charge an arm and a leg.
Brian Ibbott of Coverville pointed me to Blue Host, which specializes on podcast hosting, offering 4 GB of storage and 100 GB of file transfers a month for $6.95. I eventually decided to host my website and podcast there, and no, I’m not getting anything to plug them! I just like their service and stats which tell me how many people have downloaded and / or listened to my latest podcast.
Even if you host your podcast MP3 files with one service, it doesn’t mean you have to change your current website host. Just make sure your links from one site to the other are correct when you post your podcast – check and double-check all postings to make sure that when you publish a new episode of your podcast that it all WORKS!
Here’s a quick list of companies I tracked while I was looking for a home for my precious MP3s (the lists were accurate as of the writing of this article – check them out):
Bluehost - http://www.bluehost.com $6.95/month if you purchase a 2-year subscription. Other packages available. 2 GB storage, 75 GB/month bandwidth - a general purpose company.
Slapcast - http://slapcast.com/details. $4.95 a month - no bandwidth charges, plus Podcasting by phone. MP3s only.
Podlot.com: - www.podlot.com 150megs of space for $5 a month
No bandwidth limitations, You control your data. Unlimited bandwidth.
Podbus.com - http://www.podbus.com/ - $5 a month, 300 MB of storage, 5GB of bandwidth a month.
Libsyn.com - libsyn.com
starts at $5/month (up to $30) - built for Podcasting: based on the #MB you add per month, not on the #GB downloaded per month, which gives you a predictable cost.
EV1 Servers NET - http://www.ev1servers.net/english/vps_series.asp
$39/month - 10GB of storage, 100GB/month bandwidth, so this is only for you if you’re looking at posting a lot of large files and counting on a high listenership.
If you want more options, just do a search for ‘Podcast hosting,’ or see what favorite Podcast is using as a host and check them out.
Bottom Line: if you’re not careful about where you host your podcast, you could be eating up bandwidth and storage very quickly – as well as dumping more $$ into the than is necessary.
